REVIEWS
I very recently bought myself this version of
the 3DS XL. Not from this online seller but from my local Game Stop. Before I
even get into reviewing it, I have to say this. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS VERSION
ONLINE! It is now the OLD version and can be bought IN STORES for $175, not
$203 like it is on here. Save yourself the extra $30+ dollars to buy some games
with :).
Now that that's out of the way, let me start off by saying that I really love my 3DS XL. I have never actually played the NES system before, but I recognize it's iconic look and thought it was way cooler than the classic Red, Blue, or Black options that were available at the store. I haven't owned a Nintendo DS system since I was 11. It was the very first DS system ever sold and I played that thing CONSTANTLY. Unfortunately, due to build quality and bumbling 11 year old clumsiness, I dropped it once and the crappy little plastic hinge they used to have that connected the screens in the middle only broke partially. After that whenever I opened it the screen would flop around lopsidedly. I got so scared about using it and potentially breaking it that I stopped using it almost all together until it finally ended up getting lost and never seen again. After about six years of being out of the DS world, finally re-entering the franchise with the 3DS XL was an amazing experience for me.
I know that the brand new 3DS XL just came out, but to be honest I'm don't really care about all the extra bells and whistles that it adds to the experience. Considering that I was an OG DS player and already have some pretty low standards for DS systems, I'm not too picky about "newness". Plus, it's freaking impossible to get your hands on one of those things this late into the game anyways, lol. The fact that the DS now has one solid hinge running all along the bottom of the two screens fills me with a admittedly stupid sense excitement. To be fair, I have literally not picked up a DS since like, 2008 so my excitement is totally understandable considering what I had to deal with back then :). The huge screens are also awesome, along with the overall size of the device that makes it easy to hold onto and game with.
I highly recommend that if you want to keep this case in good condition but don't want to obscure the design of the DS that you buy the clear colored Nintendo 3DS XL Duraflexi Protector case. It isn't much in regards to drop protection (it should provide at least a little protection, but not a lot) but it WILL help protect the design and overall device from getting scuffs, scratches, or dings. If you don't care as much about seeing/showing off the design then I also heavily recommend getting the dreamGEAR Comfort Grip. It's a thick, silicone case that goes all over the case and has comfortable back handle grips to add extra grip and comfort the device for long period gaming sessions. It's not pretty (I think black is the only color option) but it's really useful.
You could also mix and match the two cases (clear case cover on the NES part of the device and silicone grip on the bottom half) if you wanted the best of both worlds and had the cash to buy the two separate cases. The dreamGEAR case and Duriflex together only come to about $30 some odd dollars off of Amazon. If you were willing to go out and scavenge a little at a Game Stop/f.y.i store though you could probably find both for cheaper. I got my dreamGEAR case for $12.99 (it's $20 on here) at an f.y.i. so you can definitely find them for cheap. Also, buy an extra back of those little styluses if your a forgetful like me.and lose them constantly. That was always my issue way back when. It got to the point that I would use screwdrivers as styluses and scratch the hell out of the screen because 11 year old me wasn't the brightest bulb.
For people who are just entering/re-entering the DS franchise and don't have many (if any) games yet, here are some of my personal recommendations. These are just some of the games that I love most and currently own. They're all great time passers and I really recommend checking them all out if you have some extra money lying around and are willing to spend a little bit extra.
1) Majora's Mask 3DS (Ocarina of Time is also great)
2) Animal Crossing: New Leaf
3) Mario Party Island Tour
4) Nintendogs
5) Brain Age

My roommate bought me one of these for
Christmas because a local game shop had it on sale and he wanted to get me
something awesome.
Pros
1. The screen is huge. Easily the largest mobile gaming display I've ever played with. It's gorgeous. Especially when playing graphically pleasing games like Bravely Default.
2. The 3D slider has an off switch. I guess, according to my roommate, the regular 3DS has a slider but no click to turn it off (I guess sliding it down eventually just turns it off). The extra click is nice.
3. Holds a charge for days.
4. SD card slot let's you expand your memory which is nice.
5. The design is wicked. It's not like a sticker or anything, it's painted on like the rest of the color. Feels very high quality. The back is a darker gray which makes the front stand out even more. The retro NES controller design just looks so cool.
6. The buttons all have a very satisfying click. The joystick feels smooth and wonderful.
7. Still plays regular Nintendo DS games. My copy of Chrono Trigger isn't useless yet!
8. The peripherals all work well. WiFi connects without problems. Speakers work fine (that other guy seems to have gotten a dud, that sucks and he should've had it RMA'd before posting a review). 3D screen works. AR stuff works. No real issues in the software.
9. I love that I can buy (most) 3DS games online and download them. Digital downloads rock.
Cons
1. The hinge wobbles ever so slightly when holding it up and playing it. Being a long time DS owner, I knew that was coming. They all wobble just a little bit but it's not a big deal. Not enough to be worried. If you don't treat it like garbage, it'll never break. Just don't be surprised if there's just a bit of wobble.
2. I'm torn because I never want to cover this baby up but I want to save it from fading or scratching so I can't decide whether or not to buy a case for it.
3. Nintendo just released "The New Nintendo 3DS" otherwise known as the Nintendo 3DS LL (Google it). It'll be in the United States in 2015 which means these bad boys will be out of date in the next 12 months. Here's hoping that most 3DS titles moving forward still accommodate all 3DS models and not just the new one (which features some extra buttons and slightly upgraded hardware). Would be unpleasant to have to upgrade next year for Bravely Second or some other game.
Overall this is a great system and an improvement over pretty much every prior DS. The retro design makes it feel unique and fans of old school video games will enjoy that. Make sure to let the speakers burn in a bit (leave it at half volume for a week or two) because that allows them to go louder without blowing them out. Also never set the game sound to max and you'll avoid burning it out.
I would buy this again if my first one broke someday. Can't wait til they have more themes!
